Materials and Properties

Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O]
Material Specification for Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O] Process: Liquid Phase Processing
Notes: The authors cite A. Goyal et al., Physica C, Vol. 182, 203 (1991), and summarize the procedure as follows. "Highly aligned 123 was prepared using a liquid phase processing technique... The samples employed for this study consisted of several domains or pseudo crystals as large as 5-6 mm long and 4-5 mm wide. Each of these domains is made up of a stack of highly aligned platelets approximately 10 µm thick. The platelets are aligned with their broad face perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis."

Elastic Modulus for Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O]
Phase (No unit) Surface (No unit) Elastic Modulus (GPa)
Y:123 (001) 143 ± 4
Y:123 (010) 182 ± 4

Measurement Method: Indentation method
"Measurements were made on a single large domain or pseudo crystal. Samples were cut in a direction perpendicular to the (001) cleavage surface...and sections of both the cleavage surface and the section perpendicular to it were cold mounted using standard metallographic procedures. The samples were ultrasonically machine polished with a 0.5 µm abrasive in an oil-based medium to prevent any reaction with water. The mechanical properties were measured using the Nanoindenter ITM #1, a highly spatially resolve mechanical properties microprobe. The mechanical properties were determined by moving the indent into the surface of the specimen with a precisely controlled load while continuously monitoring the vertical displacement associated with the indentation process. The indenter used is a Berkovich, three sided, triangular shaped diamond pyramid. It has the same area of depth function as the Vickers pyramid." Detailed experimental steps were described.
