Material Specification for Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O]
Process: Evaporation
Notes: The authors cite M.P. Siegal et al., Physica C, Vol. 172, 282 (1990), and summarize the procedure as follows. "Substrates are cleaned ultrasonically in hot Alconox (15 min), hot trichloroethylene (30 min), room temperature acetone (15 min), and room temperature de-ionized water (15 min) and dried with N2 gas. In some cases, La-containing and SrTiO3 substrates are then annealed at 860 °C in flowing O2 for 30 min, while the Nd-containing and LiBaF3 substrates are not annealed. Films 100 nm thick are grown by coevaporating BaF2, Y, and Cu onto the unheated (100) oriented substrate(s) of choice... After deposition the films are annealed by a two-stage process. During the first part of the anneal, the oxygen is bubbled through room temperature water to facilitate the hydrolysis of the BaF2 in the precursor films and promote the formation of the... tetragonal phase. After 30 min, the temperature is lowered gradually to 525 °C... Dry oxygen is used for the remainder of the anneal, which consists of 30 min at 525 °C, followed by gradual cooling to room temperature."

"To measure the transition temperature T
c, four Au leads are soldered with In to a sample surface... The critical current density... J
c has also been measured directly from I-V curves. For low current densities...a dc current staircase was used, with J
c defined using a field criterion of... 1 µV/cm. At higher current densities a low-duty-cycle trapezoidal current pulse was applied to eliminate heating; typically we employ a 1% duty cycle pulse with 0.1 ms rise and fall times and 1 ms flat top..."
