Material Specification for Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O]
Process: Melt Processed
Notes: "YBCO superconductors with and without Zr were prepared from an appropriate mixture of high-purity Y2O3, BaCO3, CuO and ZrO2 powders, which was uniaxially pressed into a pellet and calcined at 930 °C for 12 h in oxygen atmosphere. The composition was adjusted in the following two series: Zrx-YBa2Cu3O7-δ (type A) and ZrxYBa2+xCu3O7-δ (type B), where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8. The calcination was repeated three times... Ag metal powders (2 µm in diameter) were also mixed with the calcined YBCO powders and pressed into a pellet 20 mm in diameter and about 10 mm thick. The pellet thus obtained was heated to 1040 °C at a heating rate of 100 °C/h, and was held for 2 h. It was cooled to 1000 °C and then slowly cooled down to 940 °C at a rate of 1 °C/h, with subsequent furnace cooling to room temperature. The post annealing was added at 400-600 °C for 20-60 h for oxygen uptake. All heat treatments were performed in oxygen flowing atmosphere at an ambient pressure. The heat-treated sample was cut into a rectangular form using a slow speed diamond saw."

Measurement Method: Three-point bend
The authors cite "Testing Method for Flexural Strength of High Performance Ceramics: Japanese Industrial Standards," R1601 (1981), and summarize the procedure as follows. "The mechanical strength was evaluated by measuring the flexural strength... in the 3-point bending mode at room temperature with a span length of 14.7 mm and a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min. The size of the samples was 3.5 x 1 x 20 mm
3. A surface of the sample was polished in order to reduce cracks on the surface."
