Materials and Properties

Ba:11; [Ba(K,Cs)-Bi-O]
Material Specification for Ba:11; [Ba(K,Cs)-Bi-O] Process: Solid State Reaction
Notes: "... thoroughly ground stoichiometric mixtures of BaBiO3, Bi2O3 (99.99%, Aldrich Chem. Comp.), KO2(96.5%, Alfa Products) and Cs2O (99%, Alfa Products; 20% excess) were filled in alumina crucibles and placed in a quartz-tube. In the first step... the mixtures were heated up to 750-800 °C under reducing conditions in dry, flowing argon (3-3.5 L/h) and held at this temperature for one hour... Then after cooling to 710 °C (90 °C/h) it was quenched to 150 °C. The sintered preproduct is highly reactive and very sensitive against moisture and CO2 so that it has to be kept in the quartz tube. In the second step... the atmosphere was changed to dry, flowing oxygen (3-3.5 L/h). The mixtures were heated to 350 °C (200 °C/h) and then to 415-450 °C (60 °C/h) where the temperature was held for two hours... Slow cooling to 250 °C (20-25 °C/h) and then to room temperature (200 °C/h) led to the desired phases... The so synthesized samples were reground and pressed (50 kN) into pellets of 10 mm in diameter and 2-3 mm thickness... All operations like mixing, grinding and weighing were carried out under dry argon because of the sensitivity of KO2 and Cs2O against moisture."
