Material Specification for Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O]
Process: Solid State Reaction
Notes: "The YBCO powder was made by solid-state reaction of Y2O3, BaCO3, and CuO. The powders were mixed in appropriate proportions and were milled for 12 h in methanol with ZrO2 grinding media. The milled slurry was dried and then calcined in air at 890-900 °C for 24 h. The powder was then ground and screened through a 100-mesh sieve. The calcination and grinding procedures were repeated three times. Final grinding in a tungsten carbide rotary mill produced a powder with an average diameter of about 5 µm. Composites of YBCO/Ag were prepared by mixing 15 vol.% of Ag powder (reagent grade, Morton Thiokol, Danvers, MA) or flake (SF-135, Handy and Harmon, New York) with the YBCO. The average diameter of the Ag powder was 2-3.5 µm. The Ag flakes were 5-25 µm in size. The YBCO or YBCO + Ag powders were mixed in an organic solvent with appropriate deflocculent, binder, and plasticizer. The resultant slip was vibratory-milled using ZrO2 media for 16 h. The slip was degassed and cast onto a flat glass surface by the doctor blade technique. Tapes were cast with blade clearances of 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm. The cast tapes were dried in air and stripped. Circular discs 25.4 mm in diameter were punched from the green tapes and sintered in flowing oxygen for 2 h, at 940 °C for the YBCO/Ag tapes and 960 °C for the YBCO. Each specimen was given an oxygenation anneal after sintering... Thicknesses of the YBCO tapes after sintering were 80-100 µm and 150-200 µm. These tapes will be referred to as thin and thick."

Four bars were tested for each condition. The average bar dimensions were about 50 mm x 7 mm x 3 mm. Notches were cut with a 0.3-mm-wide diamond saw normal to a 3 mm x 50 mm face (into the 7-mm dimension) and were about 3 mm deep. The bars were loaded in three-point bending at a rate of 1.27 mm/min. The outer support was 19 mm."
