Material Specification for Bi:2223; [Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O]
Process: Solid State Reaction
Notes: The authors cite U. Endo et al., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys., Vol. 27, L1476 (1988), and summarize the procedure as follows. "High purity (>99.9%) powders of Bi2O3, PbO, CaCO3, SrCO3 and CuO were weighed into appropriate stoichiometry (20 g in total)... The mixtures of powders were dissolved into 1N nitric-acid solution. This solution was then spray-dried into mixed nitrate powder with a commercial spray-dry apparatus. Subsequently, this powder was decomposed/calcined at 850 °C for 15 min in air flow. After that, the obtained oxides mixture was pressed into rectangular bars (3 mm by 2 mm by 20 mm) and sintered for about 100 h at 865 °C in 20% oxygen gas flow (the balance gas being nitrogen). Part of the above sintered bars were then wrapped in gold foil, encapsulated into evacuated (0.01 Pa = 10-4) quartz tubes and post-annealed at 790 °C for various periods. The heating and cooling rates were 300 °C/h... All samples subjected to post-annealing were encapsulated into evacuated quartz tubes except sample E, for which an oxygen pressure of (0.02 MPa = 0.2 atm) (at 790 °C) was used in the ampoule."
