Notes: "1-2-3 powder (W.R. Grace, 20 µm average size) is mixed with 0-30 wt.% Ag powder (99.9% pure, 5-8 µm size) and pressed into bar-shaped specimens of 0.8 x 1.2 x 3.8 cm. The specimens are first sintered at 940 °C in air for 48 h followed by furnace cooling. They are again sintered at 960 °C in air for 24 h and furnace cooled. Liquid-phase processing is accomplished by rapid heating of the sintered composite in air to 1050 °C and held for 10 min. They are then rapidly cooled to 990 °C in oxygen, followed by slow cooling from 990 °C to 925 °C in oxygen at a rate of 1 °C/h... The specimens are then cooled to 600 °C in oxygen at a rate of 30 °C/h. This is followed by 12 h holds at 600 °C, 500 °C and 400 °C for oxygen uptake before the specimens are cooled to room temperature... For specimens with 0 and 5 wt.% Ag addition, 1-2-3 material crystallizes in a random manner during processing, and no grain orientation is obtained in these samples... Specimens containing 10 to 30 wt.% Ag additions contain regions of grain orientation ranging from 2 mm to 7 mm in size. Under the present processing conditions, the amount and size of orientation is optimized with 15 wt.% Ag addition... For the 15 wt.% Ag composites, we obtained oriented regions range from 4 to 7 mm in size... These oriented regions are made up of stacked 1-2-3 plates of 15 µm thick and 2 mm wide with Y2BaCuO5 and Ag inclusions... Samples of 1 mm x 3 mm x 25 mm are prepared from the oriented-grained 1-2-3/15 wt.% Ag composite with large oriented regions located in the center portions."
