Material Specification for Hg:1234; [Hg(Pb)-Ba-Ca-Cu-O] Process: Crystal Growth
Notes: "A gas-phase high-pressure technique was developed which allowed the growth of Hg-12(n-1)n single crystals of millimeter size. The experimental high-pressure system consists of a 15 kbar gas compressor and a piston cylinder pressure chamber with an internal three-zone Kanthal furnace. ... Mixtures of stoichiometric Hg-1223 with 10-20 at.% PbO were used for crystal growth. The growth was performed at p =10 kbar and maximum temperature T=1050-1070 °C. The sample was cooled down to 1020 °C at a rate of 5-20 °C/h, followed by a cooling rate of 5 °C/min to 860 °C. The sample was annealed for two hours at this temperature and afterwards cooled down to room temperature."

Measurement Method: X-ray diffraction
"The crystals were measured on a four-circle single-crystal diffractometer (Siemens P4) at 20 °C, using graphite monochromatized MoKα radiation (wavelength = 0.71073 σ). Intensity profiles were scanned in the omega-2θ mode and check reflections were measured every 50 reflections. 4934 reflections were collected of the whole Ewald sphere in the range 3°<2ϑ<70°. The intensity data were corrected for Lorentz polarization effects, and analytical absorption correction were applied. The dimensions of the crystal were 250x250x12 µm3. Averaging of the data in the Laue group P4/mmm yielded 459 symmettry independent reflections at an internal Ri=0.047. Absorption corrections and structure refinements were calculated with the program SHELXTL."
