Notes: The authors cite M.A.G. Aranda et al., Physica C, Vol. 221, 304 (1994), and summarize the procedure as follows. "The sample was prepared from high-purity powders of Tl2O3, PbO2, SrO2, CaO, and CuO to give the composition Tl0.5Pb0.5Sr2Ca2Cu3O9. The CaO and CuO were dried prior to use. Six charges of about 0.7 g each, were individually mixed into a paste with acetone and then pressed into pellets. The pellets were wrapped in gold foil envelopes to reduce the loss of thallium and lead at elevated temperatures, then sintered in a preheated furnace at 950 °C for 7 h in a flowing oxygen atmosphere. After sintering, the furnace was cooled to room temperature at a rate of 5 °C/min."

"Four resonant powder X-ray diffraction patterns were collected using diffractometer 2.3 at the SERC Synchrotron Radiation Source, Daresbury, at the Cu K, Tl L
, Pb L
and Sr K edges. Neutron diffraction patterns of the same sample were recorded at five temperatures between 80 K and 100 K on the POLARIS diffractometer at ISIS, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot. ... The elemental contrast gained through the large anomalous dispersion effects enabled the occupation factors of Tl, Pb, Sr, Ca, and Cu to be refined independently at each site without correlations between the values for different sites. ... Rietveld fits to neutron data... (were used to determine) the cell parameters."
