Material Specification for Y:123; [Y-Ba-Cu-O] Process: Melt Processed
Notes: The authors cite V.M. Pathare, et al., in High Temperature Superconducting Compounds III. 1991, and summarize their procedure as follows. "The starting material, a sintered mixture of YBa2Cu3O7-δ and Y2BaCuO5... was prepared using unique fiber spinning and continuous sintering processes... Melt texturing is accomplished by passing a polycrystalline sintered fiber through a simple tube furnace, where the YBa2Cu3O7-δ phase undergoes peritectic melting and solidification. The resultant microstructure consists of either a single grain or a limited, highly aligned multigrain structure of YBa2Cu3O7-δ with Y2BaCuO5 inclusions... A 15-cm long, 0.019-cm diameter fiber was broken into three 4.5-cm sample pieces,... dipped into a slurry containing silver power, slowly heated above 450 °C to burn off the organic binder, followed by a 2-min hold at 900 °C to densify the silver and create a low resistivity silver/YBCO interface... The samples were then annealed in flowing oxygen... subsequently resintered and reannealed as before. This yielded a silver coating thickness of approximately 100 µm..."

Measurement Method: Dc transport
"Critical current density was evaluated at a criterion of 1 µV/cm in boiling liquid nitrogen with fields from 0 T to 1 T applied perpendicular to the fiber axis. Data acquisition was controlled... by a computer. Voltage was monitored using a... digital voltmeter (0.1 µV resolution)... Current was supplied by a... linear power supply at a series of 100 equally spaced fixed points... a series of 24 sequential voltage readings were taken over a period of 5 s and then averaged."
