Materials and Properties

Bi:221; [Bi-Sr(La)-Cu-O]
Bi:221; [Bi(Pb)-Sr(La)-Cu-O]
Material Specification for Bi:221; [Bi-Sr(La)-Cu-O] Process: Solid State Reaction
Notes: The authors cite P.V.P.S.S. Sastry, et al., Physica C, Vol. 156, 230 (1988), and summarize the procedure as follows. "... samples... were synthesized by a two-step precursor-matrix reaction route. In the first step, a suitable matrix was synthesized by reacting all the required component oxides in the form of CuO, SrCO3, La2O3, Nd2O3, Pr4O7 (i.e. excepting Bi2O3 and PbO) in appropriate proportion at 920 °C in air for about 24 h with several intermittent grindings. The matrix was heated till all the carbonate was decomposed which was checked by dissolving a small amount of the matrix in dilute HCl and looking for absence of effervescence. In the second step the matrix was mixed thoroughly with a stoichiometric amount of Bi2O3 and PbO and reacted at 900 °C for 5-10 min until it turned completely black. The product was powdered, pelletised (12 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness) and annealed at 850-860 °C for 20 h, followed by quenching in air to room temperature by withdrawing the sample suddenly from the furnace, or by quenching in liquid nitrogen (77 K)."

Measurement Method: X-ray diffraction
"X-ray diffraction patterns were recorded using CuKα on a Phillips PW 1013 diffractometer. The XRD pattern for each composition was indexed using an orthorhombic cell (space group Amaa) and the cell dimensions were estimated by the least squares method."

Measurement Method: Four-probe method
"The electrical resistivity of the samples was measured... by a standard DC four-probe technique. The voltage drop across the inner probes was monitored ... with a resolution of 0.1 µV. The temperature of the sample was determined,... by using a calibrated Si-diode placed next to the sample."
