Materials and Properties

La:21; [La-Cu-O]
Material Specification for La:21; [La-Cu-O] Process: Melt Processed
Notes: "Single crystals of La2CuO4 were grown from excess CuO melt. Appropriate amounts of La2O3 and CuO were mixed and ground by mortar and pestle. The mixture was loaded into a 50 ml platinum crucible was placed into a box furnace and heated to a maximum temperature of 1350 °C. It was equilibrated at that temperature for 24 h followed by a slow cooling procedure to 1200 °C at a rate of 2-4 °C/h, then fast cooled to room temperature by shutting off the furnace."

Measurement Method: X-ray diffraction
"A crystal of La2CuO4, 75 µm x 100 µm x 25 µm in dimension, was selected... The crystal was mounted in a modified Merrill-Bassett... diamond cell. We used an Inconel X-750 gasket with 400 µm diameter hole. The crystal and several 10 µm chips of ruby pressure calibrant were secured against one of the anvil faces with a small dab of the alcohol-insoluble fraction of vaseline. The lattice parameters were measured using a Huber four-circle diffractometer with graphite-monochromatized MoKα radiation (wavelength = 0.7107 σ) at 40 kV and 30 mA... a 4:1 methanol:ethanol pressure medium was used."
