General Materials Processing Notes

Samples measured 50 mm in diameter and 5 mm in thickness. Material #1 had 21% β-Si3N4, 79% α-Si3N4 with trace amounts of Si2ON2. Material # 2 had 91% β-Si3N4, 4.5% α-Si3N4, and 4.5% Si2ON2. Material #3 had 33% β-Si3N4, 67% α-Si3N4, and no detectable amount of silicon oxynitride.

Measurement Methods

Thermal transport methods
A 45 kW ETCA solar furnace was used to subject the test samples to an incident light flux. Samples were held at three points by concentric grip clips with ceramic pads. This assembly was placed behind a H2O-cooled diaphragm of the same diameter as the sample. Optical pyrometry was used to measure the temperatures on both sides of the samples. Thermal diffusivities were calculated on the basis of the model of a plane wall of finite thickness.
