"Tensile Strength Properties of Hot-Pressed Silicon Nitride," T. Ohji, S. Sakai, M. Ito, Y. Yamauchi, W. Kanematsu, and S. Ito, Proceedings of the Thirtieth Japan Congress on Materials Research, pp. 201-206 (1987), published by Society of Materials Science (Japan).Language: English
"Hot pressed silicon nitride with Y2O3 5 wt% and Al2O3 3 wt% was used in this study. The density of this material was 3.199 g/cm3. The plates (80 mm long by 16 mm wide by 3 mm thick) cut from billets of hot-pressed silicon nitride (140 mm long by 140 mm wide by 16 mm thick) were roughly ground by 200 grid diamond wheel into the (dogbone) shape ... and then finished by 400 grid diamond wheel at a feed speed of 2 mm/min with a cutting depth of 20 µm. In addition, the gauge length areas of specimens were hand polished with 2000 grid diamond paste and the surface layer of 50 µm thickness was removed... The bending specimens (36 mm long by 4 mm wide by 3 mm thick) were cut from the billets so that the tensile face was perpendicular to the hot-pressing direction. All faces were ground lengthwise using a 400 grid diamond wheel and edges were chamfered using an 800 grind diamond whetstone."
The measurements were made by three-point bend method. The span length was 30 mm and the crosshead speed was 0.2 mm/min. Test were conducted in air.Tensile test
The measurements were made by tensile test method. Test jig pins were made of SiC; the universal joint and specimen holder and pull rod were made of molybdenum; and the crosshead speed was 0.1 mm/min in air.Analysis
Weibull analysis was used for both flexural and tensile test results which were obtained by the three-point bending and tensile tests repectively.
