General Materials Processing Notes

The authors cite H. R. Baumgartner et al., J. Am. Ceram. Soc., Vol. 67, 207-212 (1984), and summarize the procedure as follows. "...special nonaqueous blending and drying procedures are required for material processing. ... The mixture, combined with binders, can be readily net-shape fabricated ... The green compacts are pressureless sintered in an inert atmosphere at temperatures (greater than) 2000 °C."

Measurement Methods

Four-point bend test
The measurements were made by four-point bend method. Bars were cut to 3.18 mm x 6.35 mm x 51 mm; specimens were ground to size, and their edges were chamfered. Inner span = 19 mm and outer span = 38 mm, and the crosshead speed = 8.5 µm/s. Tests were conducted in air.
Single-edge notched beam
The measurements were made by single edge notch beam method. Samples were configured with a central notch that was 2.5 mm deep.
Oxidation test
"The oxidation resistance ... (was) determined from weighed test coupons heated in static air (for 200 h)."
