"Phase Transformation and Thermal Conductivity of Hot-Pressed Silicon Carbide Containing Alumina and Carbon," T. Sakai and T. Aikawa, Journal of the American Ceramic Society, Vol. 71 [1], pp. C7-C9 (1988), published by American Ceramic Society.Language: English
"The starting material was β-SiC powder (Ibiden Co., Ltd., Ogaki, Japan) having an average particle size of 0.3 µm. ... Alumina powder (A16SG, Aluminum Co. of America, Bauxite, AR) and resol phenol-formaldehyde resin (Dainippon Ink and Chemicals, Inc., Tokyo, Japan) (as the carbon source) were added to the β-SiC powder. The ingredients were mixed with ethanol in a polyethylene ball mill for 20 h. The mixture was dried and sieved through a 100-mesh screen. Hot-pressing was performed in an induction heated furnace with a graphite die as susceptor. ... About 0.6 g of the mixture was hot-pressed in the graphite die with a pressure of 20 MPa under a vacuum of 10 mPa. The temperature was increased at a rate of 50 °C/min and then held at a fixed temperature (generally 2050 °C) for 30 min. The resulting hot-pressed SiC was 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness."
"...the density of the compact was calculated from its size and weight. When the density was greater than 3.0 g/cm(3), it was measured by means of the water displacement method to determine it more exactly."Laser flash technique
"Thermal conductivity was measured at room temperature under vacuum by the laser flash technique. The measured values were corrected for the porosity of the compact..." No additional measurement details were noted.
