"The Fabrication and Properties of Self-Bonded Silicon Carbide Bodies," C.W. Forrest, P. Kennedy, and J.V. Shennan, Special Ceramics, Vol. 5, pp. 99-123 (1972), published by The British Ceramic Research Association.Language: English
"The α-SiC and graphite powders are firstly dry blended in a Y-cone mixer. To this mix is added a weighed amount of a binder, containing a thermoplastic polymer and plasticizer in varing amounts dispersed in a solvent, and a small weighed amount of thermosetting resin, and the whole mix is slurried with an excess of methylethylketone to ensure a uniform distribution of the binder. The slurry is vacuum dried and at a suitable stage in the drying operation the cake is broken up to a friable powder. Drying is continued until the binder plus solvent reaches a preset weight, then the mix is removed and compacted. ... The mix is pressed to give cylindrical equi-axed compacts and then pre-extruded as (2.54 mm = 0.1 in.) diameter rod through a multi-hole extrusion plate. ... The extruded material is cut to length and loaded in graphite V-blocks for removal of binder by heating to 370°C in air. ... The reaction sintering process is performed under vacuum in a graphite crucible heated by induction. ... At 1410°C the silicon melts, is transported to the base of the compacts by surface wetting and rises through them, reacting with the graphite, the temperature being allowed to reach 1600-1700°C. When the reaction is complete, the crucible is allowed to cool to room temperature and the silicided material is removed."
"The modulus of rupture of self-bonded silicon carbide has been measured in air under three-point loading. An average value of 424 MPa with a standard deviation of... 30 MPa was obtained...at room temperature." No additional measurement details were noted.
