General Materials Processing Notes

All of the materials were prepared by pressureless sintering. The materials, sintering aids, and sintering temperatures were as follows: Al2O3 with MgO was sintered at 1700 °C. Si3N4 with Y2O3 and Al2O3 was sintered at 1750 °C. SiC with B4C was sintered at 2100 °C. ZrO2 with Y2O3 and Al2O3 was sintered at 1500 °C.

Measurement Methods

Three-point bend test
Three-point bend tests were conducted at room temperature and 400 °C. The tensile strength was calculated using an analysis of the bend test results.
Vickers indentation
Hardness was determined using a Vickers indentation test.
