"Burner Rig Hot Corrosion of Silicon Carbide and Silicon Nitride," D.S. Fox and J.L. Smialek, Journal of the American Ceramic Society, Vol. 73 [2], pp. 303-311 (1990), published by American Ceramic Society.Language: English
The materials used in this study were commercially available silicon carbide and silicon nitride materials.
Strengths were measured using a four-point bend fixture with an outer span of 1.9 cm and inner span of 0.95 cm. The loading rate was 0.05 cm/min. The nominal dimensions of the specimens were 2.50 cm x 0.55 cm by 0.27 cm for SiC, and 2.50 cm x 0.64 cm x 0.34 cm for Si3N4. Corroded specimens were polished flat on both tensile and compressive sides. Specimens were polished with 600-grit SiC paper, followed by polishing with 45-µm thick remained on these samples after polishing. The top faces with the largest amounts of corrosion products were used as the tensile surfaces in the bend tests. Specimens were corroded in a burner rig pressurized to 400 kPa using jet A fuel (0.05% S) burned at a fuel-to air ratio of 0.021±0.002 at a temperature of 1000 ± 10 °C. The ends of the specimens were held by grade A lava (aluminosilicate) holders. Specimens were positioned horizontally with thicknesses facing the gas flow. Temperatures were measured with two type R thermocouples placed in the gas stream between the specimens with specimen-to -thermocouple distances of about 3.8 cm. The gas speed was 94±3 m/s. The gas contained 2 ppm Na added by aspirating a solution of NaCl/H2O into the flame.
