Commercially available sintered α-silicon carbide was used in this study.
Specimens were 7.62 cm x 2.54 cm x 0.347 cm. Specimens were supported on SiC blocks placed at the nodes of vibration in a furnace. Direct acoustic coupling with the specimen was achieved using single crystal sapphire fibers. A digitally generated sine wave was used to produce flexural and torsional resonances. Response signals were monitored by piezoelectric transducers and resolved by fast Fourier transform techniques.
