"Engineering Properties of Nitrides," S. Hampshire, Engineered Materials Handbook, Vol. 4, pp. 812-820 (1991), edited by S.J. Schneider, Jr., published by ASM International.Language: English
"Silicon Nitride - Silicon nitride may be produced by various methods to give a range of products, each one named after the fabrication route employed. The major types are:
· Reaction-bonded silicon nitride (RBSN)
· Hot pressed silicon nitride (HPSN)
· Sintered (pressureless) silicon nitride (SSN)
· Sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitride (SRBSN)
· Hot isostatically pressed silicon nitride (HIPSN)
Sialons:
... Aluminum can replace silicon in the beta silicon nitride structure if, at the same time, nitrogen in replaced by oxygen giving a substituted solid solution referred to as β'-sialon with a composition range of Si6-zAlzOzN8-z based on the β-Si6N8 unit cell. Sialons are synthesized by reacting together silicon nitride with other constituents to achieve an appropriate β' composition... ...
Silicon oxynitride:
Si2N2O, has received less attention as an engineering ceramic than silicon nitride and is still under development. It may be synthesized from mixtures of silicon nitride and silica in conjunction with densification additives. With Al2O3 present, some limited solid solubility occurs. Pressureless sintering ... and pressure-assisted processes ... may be employed. ...
Aluminum nitride:
... The ceramic is manufactured from aluminum nitride powder mixed with densification additives such as CaO or Y2O3 by a process of tape casting into thin sheets followed by blanking out and sintering at 1650 to 1800 °C ...in a nitrogen atmosphere. With yttrium oxide as sintering aid, the yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) is formed at the grain boundaries... ...
Boron nitride:
... The cubic form of boron nitride...is produced from the hexagonal form at high temperature and pressure, similar to the synthesis of diamond."
Typical values usually are representative of trends of values commonly found for a general class of materials and are not necessarily the best or most appropriate values for any particular material.
