The authors cite V.I. Aleksandrov et al.; pp. 421-480 in Current Topics in Material Science, Vol. 1, Edited by E. Kaldis, North-Holland Publishing, Amsterdam (1978), and summarize the procedure as follows. "The single crystals of both fully and partially stabilized ZrO2 were produced by directional solidification from the melt, known as skull melting."
"Expansion samples consisted of single crystals of irregular cross-section dimensions (nominally 7-mm diameter) and (about) 26 mm long. Sample ends were ground flat and parallel and the thermal expansion was measured in the crystal growth direction, i.e., the cubic <110> direction. Samples which were shorter than 26 mm were stacked end to end in the test cell. Samples were cycled in air from room temperature to 1500 °C at 1 °C/min to minimize thermal delay effects in these low-conductivity samples. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion was derived from a continuous recording of the sample length throughout the heating and cooling cycles using a precision LVDT system with 0.1 µm resolution."
