General Materials Processing Notes

"Vanadium, zirconium and hafnium were purchased from The Materials Research Corporation, Orangeburg, NY, U.S.A. Niobium, tantalum and molybdenum were supplied by Koch-Light Laboratories Ltd., Colnbrook, U.K., and titanium, chromium, manganese and tungsten by Highways International, Baarn, The Netherlands. The manufacturer of the rhenium powder was Heraeus, Hanau, F.R.G., and of the boron was H.C. Starck, Berlin. The samples were prepared by arc melting mixtures of metal and boron under a purified titanium-gettered argon atmosphere. The samples were subsequently heat treated at 1873 K for 5 h in a high-frequency furnace under an argon atmosphere. Most of the diborides were single phased after the heat treatment. ... the composition of the niobium boride sample was NbB1.99. The tantalum boride sample contained Ta3B4 as a second phase. ... the composition of the diboride was TaB1.92. The molybdenum boride sample, containing the AlB2-type of MoB2, also contained small amounts of MoB. ... Arc-melted samples of stoichiometric MoB2 displayed the low temperature modification "MoB2.0" (of the "Mo2B5"-type structure). The hafnium diboride sample contained orthorhombic HfB as a second phase. The rhenium boride sample contained ReB2 (unique ReB2-type structure) and small amounts of Re7B3."

Measurement Methods

X-ray diffraction
"The lattice parameters at ambient temperature were determined using an XDC-1000 Guinier-Hagg focusing camera with CuKα1 radiation and silicon (a = 5.43106 Å) as the internal calibration standard. The lattice parameters vs. temperature curves were determined using a focusing high temperature X-ray powder diffraction camera with CuKα radiation. The specimens were heated in vacuum (10-4 Pa) and the temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10% Rh thermocouple. ... The temperature was constant to within ±10 K during an exposure. Aluminum oxide of high purity was used as an internal calibration standard. ... The specimens were studied by exposing films at successively higher temperatures as well as at successively lower temperatures. ... No significant differences between the lattice dimensions were observed, indicating that no changes as regards composition and impurities had occurred in the specimen. The unit cell dimensions were least-squares refined using the local program CELLKANT. ... The average linear thermal expansion coefficients were determined from the relation α = (1/a0 (a - a0)/(T - T0) ... In the present study T0 is 298 K."
