General Materials Processing Notes

The authors cite NBS Certificate. Standard Reference Material 720, Synthetic Sapphire (Al2O3); August 26, 1970, and summarize the procedure as follows. "Standard Reference Material 720 (α-Al2O3) has been offered by the NBS (now NIST) Office of Standard Reference Materials since 1970." ... (The certificate indicates:)... "The material furnished is synthetic sapphire cylinders, cut from centerless-ground rods grown by the Vernieul process and obtained from the Union Carbide Corporation."

Measurement Methods

Calorimetry
"Bunsen ice calorimeter was used from 273.15 K to 1173.15 K and an adiabatic receiving calorimeter from 1173.15 K to 2250 K. ... The present work presents this enthalpy data and... documents a re-smoothing of the NBS low temperature heat capacity data on SRM 720 obtained since 1970. New smoothed heat capacity data for SRM 720 in the temperature interval 10 K to 2250 K are presented."
