General Materials Processing Notes

The authors cite C. Kloc et al., J. Alloys Comp., Vol. 219, 93 (1995), and summarize the procedure as follows. "The synthesis and pulling of FeSi or α-FeSi2 were done in one run by the Czochralski technique. Before melting the charge material, the apparatus was evacuated to a pressure of 10-5 mbar, approximately, refilled with pure argon (mass fraction 0.99999), and evacuated again. Growth runs were carried out in a dynamic vacuum of 1·10-5 mbar. Iron (mass fraction > 0.99998, Alfa) and silicon (mass fraction 0.99999, Atomergic Chemicals) reacted inside an Al2O3 crucible. An excess 5% mass fraction of silicon over the stoichiometric amount was added to compensate for the volatilization of silicon during the growth process. After 1 h, required for reaction and homogenization, the seed crystal was partially immersed in the melt, and the growth process was started."

"For the calorimetric measurements, the monocrystals were broken into pieces of (1 to 3) mm in size. The following amounts were used; FeSi, 7.26807 g (molar mass, 83.8763 g·mol-1); α-FeSi2, 7.04853 g (molar mass, 120.5841 g·mol-1). The heat capacity measurements were performed in a low-temperature adiabatic calorimeter (CAL VII). ... The calorimeter vessel is made of gold-plated copper with a re-entrant well for the (thermometer + heater) assembly. The sample was placed in the calorimeter vessel and the vessel was purged by carefully evacuating and adding helium in order to remove any moisture from the sample. Finally, to facilitate thermal contact between the sample and calorimeter, the vessel was closed under a helium pressure of 1000 Pa at T = 300 K. The thermometer was calibrated on the IPTS-68 scale (Oxford Instruments) and corrected to the IST-90 scale... The estimated error in the determination of the heat capacities is about 2% between T = 10 K and T = 30 K and about 0.2% from T = 30 K to T = 100 K; above T = 100 K, the error is less than 0.1%."
