"The various samples studied were generously supplied by the American Potash and Chemical Company, the Carborundum Company and the Norton Company. Spectrographic analyses showed only trace impurities. In all cases, the samples were contained in pure gold containers and were X-rayed before and after the runs. No reactions were noted from a visual inspection and no new phases were apparent for the X-ray patterns. It should be realized, however, that probably 2% - 5% of a well-developed crystalline phase was the minimum needed for detection so that 1% - 2% of crystalline impurities or even larger amounts of amorphous impurities probably could not have been detected. Normal procedures included the weighing of the sample plus its container after each run so that changes due to leakage of air into the capsule and susbsequent oxidation or evaporation could be detected and were avoided in selection of the final data."
The authors cite Grimley et al., J. Phys. Chem., Vol. 64, 1763 (1960), and summarize the procedure as follows. "The apparatus has been calibrated electrically and, in addition, samples of synthetic sapphire from the National Bureau of Standards have been run for comparison purposes. The accuracy of the calorimeter is ±0.5% while the reproducibility of a given measurement is slightly better. Several drops were also made with empty pure gold capsules at various temperatures since the heat content must be corrected for the containing capsule. ... Data for the calorimeter were processed on an IBM-650 (later a CDC-1604) computer... and the experimental data provided the smoothed thermodynamic functions..."
