1,2-dibromoethane sample was mixed with 40 cm3 aqueous electrolyte solution in a flask fitted with a thermostat jacket and a powerful stirrer. After a stirring time of 2-3 days, samples were taken from both phases for analysis. The bromine concentration was determined by adding HNO

to the solution and the free bromine was titrated with AgNO

solution. The water content of the organic rich phase was calculated by the method of Kariusu.
