Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: Benzene with Water

Components:
   (1) Water; H2O; [7732-18-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Benzene; C6H6; [71-43-2]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   Worley, J.D., Can. J. Chem. 1967, 45, 2465-7.

Variables:
   Temperature = One temperature: 25 °C

Prepared By:
   A. Maczynski

Experimental Remarks:

The solubility of benzene in water at 25 °C was reported to be 2.17 g(1) dm-3 sln.
The corresponding mass percent and mole fraction, x1, values calculated by the compiler are 0.217 g(1)/100 g sln and 5.01 x 10-4. The compiler's calculation assumes a solution density of 1.00 g mL-1.

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The isotopic solute transfer technique of Christian et al. (refs 1, 2), was used.
This method consists of vapor phase equilibrations of water with solutions of benzene-dinonylphthalate in closed containers. The benzene absorbance was measured at 254 nm with a Cary 14 spectrophotometer.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) source not specified; reagent grade; used as received.
   (2) distilled.

Estimated Errors:

   Temperature: ± 0.2 K
