Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: Toluene with Water

Components:
   (1) Water; H2O; [7732-18-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Toluene; C7H8; [108-88-3]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   Gregory, M.D.; Christian, S.D.; Affsprung, H.E., J. Phys. Chem. 1967, 71, 2283-9.

Variables:
   Temperature = One temperature: 25 °C

Prepared By:
   A. Maczynski and Z. Maczynska

Experimental Remarks:

The solubility of water in toluene at 25 °C was reported to be 0.0268 mol (2) dm-3 sln.
The corresponding mass percent and mole fraction, x1, calculated by the compilers are 0.0560 g(2)/100 g sln and 2.86 x 10-3. The assumption that 1 dm3 sln = 863 g sln was used in the calculation.

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
A solution of (2) in (1) was obtained using solute isopiestic equilibrator described in ref 1. Water concentration was determined with a Beckman KF-3 aquameter by the Karl Fischer analysis.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) source not specified; reagent grade; fractionally distilled through a 30-plate Oldershaw column.
   (2) not specified.

Estimated Errors:

   Temperature: ± 0.05 K
