Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: Heptane with Water

Components:
   (1) Water; H2O; [7732-18-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Heptane; C7H16; [142-82-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   Durand, R., C.R. Hebd. Seances Acad. Sci. 1948, 226, 409-10.

Variables:
   Temperature = One temperature: 16 °C

Prepared By:
   M.C. Haulait-Pirson

Experimental Remarks:

The solubility of heptane in water at 16°C was reported to be 0.015 cm3(1)/dm3(2).
With the assumption of a solution density of 1.00 g cm-3 and a density value of 0.6868 g cm-3 for heptane at 16°C (ref 2), the corresponding mass percent is 0.0010 g sln and the corresponding mole fraction, x1, is 1.8 x 10-6 (compiler).

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The thermostatic method described in ref 1 was used.
Addition of pippeted volumes of (1) to (2) followed by shaking is repeated till appearance of turbidity.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) not specified.
   (2) distilled.

Estimated Errors:
   Solubility: ± 0.005 cm3(1)/dm3(2)
