Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: Benzene with Water

Components:
   (1) Water; H2O; [7732-18-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Benzene; C6H6; [71-43-2]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   McBain, J.W.; Lissant, K.J., J. Phys. Colloid. Chem. 1951, 55, 655-62.

Variables:
   Temperature = One temperature: 25 °C

Prepared By:
   M.C. Haulait-Pirson and G.T. Hefter

Experimental Remarks:

The solubility of benzene in water at 25 °C was reported to be 0.151 g(1)/100 mL sln.

The corresponding mass percent and mole fraction solubilites, calculated by the compilers assuming a solution density of 1.00 kg dm-3, are 0.151 g(1)/100 g sln and x1 = 3.48 x 10-4.

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
10 mL portions of (2) are pipetted into glass vials, following which, varying amounts of (1) were added to each bottle by direct weighing. The vials were shaken overnight. When two vials had been obtained, one clear and one with excess hyrocarbon and containing amounts differing by less than 1 mg, the two values were averaged and the mean taken as the amount solubilized.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) C.P. grade.
   (2) distilled and boiled to remove CO2.

Estimated Errors:

   Temperature: not specified.
