A mixture of 1,1,1-trichloroethane and water was agitated overnight and left at equilibrium for 24 hours. Three samples were withdrawn for each phase with a syringe and analyzed by gas chromatography. The gas chromatograph (C. Erba ATc/t) was  equipped with a Shimadzu Chromatopac E-1A integrator. A stainless column packed with 100-120 mesh Chromosorb W DMCD coated with heptadecane nitrile was used for analysis.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) Fluka reagent, purified by distillation before use.
   (2) Distilled (compiler).
