Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
A 20 cm3 1,2-dibromoethane sample was mixed with 40 cm3 water in a flask fitted with a thermostat jacket and a powerful stirrer. After the samples were stirred for 2-3 days, portions were taken from both phases  for analysis. The bromine concentration was determined by adding HNO3 to the solution and the free bromine was titrated with AgNO3 solution. The water content of the organic-rich phase was  calculated by the method of Kariusu.1
