A mixture of 10 to 20 cm3 1,1-dichloroethane in 500 cm3 of an aqueous KCl solution in a bottle was placed in a water thermostat bath. The sample container was placed on a shaker and agitated until no more  liquid droplets remained undissolved. One or more samples were syphoned out and the concentration of the 1,1-dichloroethane was determined using a Zeiss water interferometer.
