Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: Nitromethane with cis-9-Octadecene

Components:
   (1) cis-9-Octadecene; C18H36; [7206-25-9]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Nitromethane; CH3NO2; [75-52-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   H.H.O. Schmid; Mangold, H.K.; Lundberg, W.O., Microchem. J. 11, 376-83 (1966).

Variables:
   Temperature = 416 K

Prepared By:
   V. P. Sazonov

Experimental Remarks:

The upper critical solution temperature of nitromethane and cis-9-octadecene was reported to be 143 °C (416 K, compiler).

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The synthetic method was used. As described in Schmid et al.,1 a microscope equipped with a heating stage was used. A sealed glass capillary, containing (1) and (2), was held on the heating stage by an aluminum slide. The stage was cooled by acetone/CO2, and heated electrically by a regulating transformer. For capillaries with inner diameter (0.2 to 0.3 mm), the amount required for one CST determination is about 0.2 to 2 μL.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) Fisher Scientific Co.
   (2) Not specified.

Estimated Errors:
   Solubility: Not reported.
   Temperature: Not reported.
   Pressure: Not reported.
