Notes:
Table 1  *  This table was prepared by the compiler from the published curve of ternary system solubility.

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The method of Treybal1 was used. For determining the phase distribution data, known mixtures of ternary constituents comprising of (1), (2) and (3) well within the heterogeneous region were placed in a constant temperature bath after vigorous agitation and allowed to separate into two phases after attaining equilibrium. The two phases were separated and weighed. A weighed quantity of each phase was taken in a distilling flask, and water bath. Traces of (1) and (2) remaining were removed under vacuum by drying the esters on a water bath to constant weight under a stream of carbon dioxide. Total weight of the esters thus obtained was checked against the weight of ester taken originally in the mixture.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) Fluka AG; distilled; b. p. = (100.5 to 101.5) °C, n(30 °C, D) = 1.3770, d(30 °C, 4 °C) = 1.1237.
   (2) BDH Ltd.; laboratory reagent-grade; distilled; b. p. = (67 to 70) °C, n(30 °C, D) = 1.3761, d(30 °C, 4 °C) = 0.6782.
   (3) Prepared by methylation of castor oil; using HCl as catalyst; dried and distilled.

Estimated Errors:

   Temperature: control to ± 0.1 K.
