System completely miscible.
Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The analytical method was used. The distribution of (2) between (1) and (3) was studied by preparing a mixture of aqueous nitric acid and nitromethane, such that after mixing the two phases were almost identical in composition. An extremely slow rate of phase separation of approximately equal volumes of each phase indicated this. Nitric acid (15 N) was added dropwise to the system and agitated until the system just became homogeneous. This condition was taken as the plait point and the termination of the distribution curve. The single-phase system was analyzed for nitric acid and the remaining points on the curve were obtained by adding successively increasing amounts of water to the system remaining after equilibration and analysis of the two phases from the previous determination. Nitric acid was determined in both phases by dilution of weighed aliquots with 100-150 mL of water and titration with 0.1 N potassium hydroxide to the methyl orange end point.
