Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The isothermal method was used. Equilibrium was reached in 2 weeks. The NH
4
+
content was determined by the tetraphenylborate method. The cadmium content was determined by complexometric titration using Eriochrome Black T as indicator. The barium content was determined gravimetrically. The composition of the solid phases was determined by Schreinemakers method, by DT analysis, IR spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction.
Source and Purity of Materials:
Cd(CHO
2
)
2
•2H
2
O was prepared by neutralizing 85% formic acid with p.a. grade CdCO
3
. p.a. grade Ba(CHO
2
)
2
was used. The barium and cadmium formates were recrystallized twice from a 1% formic acid solution. Ammonium formate was prepared by passing NH
3
into 90% formic acid. The crystals were washed with ethanol and dried under vacuum over sulfuric acid.
Estimated Errors:
Temperature: The temperature was controlled to within ±0.1 °C.
