Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: 1-Nitropropane with Uranium bis (nitrato-O) dioxohexahydrate

Components:
   (1) 1-Nitropropane; C3H7NO2; [108-03-2]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Uranium bis (nitrato-O) dioxohexa-hydrate; UO2(NO3)2 ×6H2O; [13520-83-7]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   Warner, R.K., Austral. J. Appl. Sci. 4, 581-9 (1953).

Variables:
   Temperature = 293 K

Prepared By:
   V. P. Sazonov

Experimental Remarks:

The solubility of uranyl nitrate (2) in 1-nitropropane (1) at 20 °C (293 K, compiler) was reported to be 100 w2 = 1.1. The corresponding mole fraction, x2, calculated by the compiler, is 0.003.

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The analytical method was used. A sample of (2) was placed with the appropriate amount of pure (1) in a small flask. The contents of the flask were warmed to 30 to 50°C, agitated with excess crystals of (2) for 15 min, and then placed in a constant temperature bath at 20°C with intermittent shaking for 6 to 8 h. Crystallization from the supersaturated solution occurred, and when equilibrium was reached the solution was quickly decanted, filtered to remove fine crystals, and placed in a stoppered flask at 20°C for analysis.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) Synthesized by standard method; thoroughly dried and fractionally distilled.
   (2) Source not specified; A. R. grade; not purified.

Estimated Errors:
   Solubility: ±0.2 g/100 g solution.
   Temperature: ±0.05 K.
