Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The synthetic method was used. Mixtures of near-critical composition were made in glass tubes, closed at one end and joined to vacuum-tight Teflon-glass valves. Phase-separation temperatures were determined visually. The critical composition sample was the one most opalescent at its phase-separation temperature. Two different pycnometers, volumes 25 mL & 50 mL, of the type glass-bulb-to-capillary, were used to determine densities of mixtures. Surface tension was measured by the differential-capillary-rise method using a sample cell adapted from Calado et al.1
