Quantitative solubility data for the system nitroethane + hexane were reported in the publications listed in Table 1.
All original data are given in the data sheets immediately following this Critical Evaluation.
The following individual points in otherwise satisfactory studies are in marked disagreement with other studies and have been rejected: in the nitroethane-rich phase at 298 K (Snyder and Eckert3), 301.5 and 302.4 K.1 Table 2 and Table 3 has been prepared on the basis of all other reported data.
Values obtained by the evaluator by graphical interpolation or extrapolation from the data sheets are presented in the Table 2 and Table 3. Data are"recommended" if two or more apparently reliable studies are in reasonable (± 5 % relative) agreement. All other data are regarded as tentative only.
The upper critical solution temperature has been reported as 300.575 K,6 302.5 K,1 304.1 K,5 304.5 K,3 and 305.7 K.2 Thus, the tentative value is: Tc = (303.5 ± 2) K. The corresponding critical solution composition has been reported as xcl = 0.500 (Beridze and Karshibaev5) and xcl = 0.560.6
Thus, the tentative value is: xcl = 0.53 ± 0.03.
The recommended and tentative values for the mutual solubility reported in the above table were approximated by an equation based on the scaling law (described in the preface to this volume) for which the following parameters were derived: a1 = 0.82346, a2 = 0.31876, b1 = 4.24293, b2 = -3.51701
(mean standard error of estimate was 0.0359).
For this approximation, the tentative values of UCST and xcl have been used. This relationship is presented in Fig. 5 together with experimental data reported in four references.1-3,6
