Critical Evaluation:

            Solubilities in the system nitroethane (1) and 1,2-ethanediol (2) were reported in two publications. Francis1 carried out measurement of the mutual solubilities of the two components between 273 and 341 K by the synthetic method. Zhuravlev and Erofeeva2 studied of the mutual solubilities of (1) and (2) between 299 and 342 K also by the synthetic method.
         The upper critical solution temperature was reported as 341.2 K (Francis1) and 342.2 K (Zhuravlev and Erofeeva2). Thus, the recommended value is: Tc = (341.7 ± 0.5) K. The corresponding critical solution composition was reported as x1 = 0.483 (Francis1) and as x1 = 0.517 (Zhuravlev and Erofeeva2).
         All experimental values reported in Francis1 and Zhuravlev and Erofeeva2 (treated with the same weighing factor) have been approximated by an equation based on the scaling law (described in the preface to this volume) for which the following parameters were derived:

                  a1 = 1.18831, a2 = - 1.07779, b1 = -4.94422, b2 = 4.15935 (mean standard error of estimate was 0.0425).

         For approximation xcl and UCST from Zhuravlev and Erofeeva2 have been used. In the opinion of the evaluator, the mutual solubilities calculated by this equation may be treated as tentative. The results of calculations for the selected temperatures are presented in following table. This relationship together with experimental points reported in Francis1 and Zhuravlev and Erofeeva2 are also presented in Fig. 2.
