Glass Ball as Bullet Solubility System: Benzene with Water

Components:
   (1) Water; H2O; [7732-18-5]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail
   (2) Benzene; C6H6; [71-43-2]  NIST Chemistry WebBook for detail

Original Measurements:
   Johnson, J.R.; Christian, S.D., J. Chem. Soc. A. 1966, 77-8.

Variables:
   Temperature = One temperature: 25 °C

Prepared By:
   A. Maczynski and Z. Maczynska

Experimental Remarks:

The solubility of water in benzene at 25 °C was reported to be 0.0349 mol (2)/dm3 sln.
The corresponding mass percent and mole fraction, x2, calculated by the compilers are 0.0719 g(2)/100 g sln and 3.11 x 10-3.
The compiler's calculation assumes a solution density of 1.00 g mL-1.

Experimental Data:   (Notes on the Nomenclature)
   Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The appartus described in ref 1 was used without modification. Samples were equilibrated in a constant-temperature water-bath maintained at 25 ± 0.1 °C. Water solubilities were determined by using a Beckman Model KF-3 Aquameter.

Source and Purity of Materials:
   (1) source not specified; certified or reagent grade; distilled through a 30-plate Oldershaw column.
   (2) not specified.

Estimated Errors:
Solubility: ± 0.0005 mol(2)dm3 sln (type of error not specified)
   Temperature: ± 0.1 K
