Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The method used was the isothermal decrease of supersaturation. Equilibrium was reached in 10-15 h. The magnesium content was determined complexometrically. The chloride ion content was determined volumetrically by the Mohr method. The magnesium formate concentration was estimated by difference. The composition of the ideally suction-dried solid phase was determined by the Schreinemakers method. X-ray diffraction and DT analysis were also used.
Source and Purity of Materials:
The magnesium chloride was p. a. grade (Merck). The magnesium formate was prepared by the reaction of dilute formic acid with magnesium oxide, carbonate or hydroxide all of which were p.a. grade (Merck or Fluka).
